Top News From The Beijing Motor Show

The Beijing Motor Show is a huge event in the automotive industry. It follows the New York Motor Show and always features a batch of exciting new models. If you are lucky enough to attend you will get to see all the very latest concept car launches.

It’s an extremely important date for car manufacturers because the market in China is so influential. Here are some of the top new car launches that were announced at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show.

Audi TT SUV concept unveiled


Audi have unveiled their latest Audi TT SUV model saying it represents the ‘urban mobility of tomorrow.’ They claim it is sustainable, dynamic, intelligent and connected. It’s a plug-in-hybrid model which combines two electric motors with a  292 hp/380 Nm 2.0 TFSI engine. It also has a six-speed e-S tronic dual-clutch gear box.

It’s a positive sign for cars of the future, proving that hybrid models are beginning to build momentum. Average fuel consumption for the SUV concept is an extremely efficient 1.9 litres per 100 kilometres. "The Audi TT off road concept provides a glimpse of how we might imagine a new model in the future TT family," Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development commented.  The car is charged by being parked on an inductive pad where it utilises the Audi Wireless Charging technology.

Bentley reveals luxury hybrid car

Following on from their claims to make available at least 90% of its cars as plug in hybrids by the end of the decade, Bentley has revealed their first hybrid concept car. This car combines petrol and electric power, cutting emissions by 70% and enabling the car to achieve 30 miles solely on electric power.

This shows that along with many other companies they are starting to get serious about hybrids. The Chairman of Bentley, Dr Wolfgang Schreiber said ‘There is no doubt that plug-in hybrid technology is true to Bentley’s values of outstanding luxury and effortless performance.’ This plug-in hybrid system is expected to debut on their SUV crossover that’s due in 2016.

Honda Concept B unveiled

Another interesting reveal at the motor show was the Honda Concept B, a car designed specifically for the Chinese market. Honda claims it will be very fuel efficient and fun to drive. It will have a ‘FUNTEC’ hybrid powertrain, C-shaped taillights and a stand out centre light bar. It’s another petrol-electric hybrid to be unveiled at the Beijing Motor show. This car is expected to go on sale within two years and it should have an affordable price tag.

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Nazionale Debut


One of the most exciting cars on show was the new Lamborghini Aventador supercar. They have named it the Nazionale which means ‘national’ in Italian. Therefore the car is naturally green, white and red, representing the Italian flag. These colours run across the length of the body, covering the front bonnet. The main changes are to the interior, the mechanicals remain the same. The Lamborghini Aventador Nazionale can reach 62 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds and has a top speed of 217 miles per hour. The interior features include Q-citura stitching, extended stitching on the steering wheel and flags on the head rests.

Mini shows off revived Paceman

After revealing their brand new Countryman at the New York Auto Show, Mini followed up by launching the new Paceman model at the Beijing Motor Show. A lot of the updates used on the Countryman were also used for the Paceman. The new colours for both models are Jungle Green, Midnight Grey and Piano Black. The changes to the new Mini are minor, subtle exterior style updates such as an updated grille and new alloy wheels. It’s also supposed to have a new sound deadening feature to help achieve ‘acoustic comfort’.

BMW Future Vision Luxury concept

The latest BMW luxury car concept was another big attraction at the Beijing Motor Show. It is highly likely that the new features in this car will be incorporated on the sixth-generation 7-series which is set to be out next year. “The BMW Vision Future Luxury is the messenger of our philosophy of modern luxury,” said Karim Habib, head of BMW design.

The new model features a huge twin kidney grille, a chrome trim and carbon-fiber air deflectors. It also has some new tech features to get excited about such as a new head up display which highlights hazards, buildings and traffic signs and a touch command tablet.
