US Company General Motors has named Mary Barra as their new Chief Executive. Barra will replace Daniel Akerson as chief executive and will become the first woman to run a US carmaker.
Ms Barra joined GM as an electrical engineering student in 1980 and has worked her way up to lead GMs global product development. This job was considered a critical role at GM, and she has received praise for her leadership of the unit.
Under her leadership, GM has rolled out new pick-up trucks and the Chevrolet Impala, which was highly rated by Consumer Reports magazine. Ms Barra has a reputation for keeping costs down and cutting bureaucracy. In a statement she said with an amazing portfolio of cars and trucks and the strongest financial performance in our recent history, this is an exciting time at todays GM.
This month saw the US Government sell off its remaining shares in GM, and overall it lost around $10bn on its bailouts of the carmaker in the aftermath of the financial crisis in 2008/2009.
The current chief financial officer, Dan Ammann, was named GM President, and will take responsibility for the Cadillac and Chevrolet brands.
