Frankfurt Motor Show 2015 Roundup
posted on Sep 28 2015 by Josh Seymour
It’s always great this time of year when Frankfurt Motor show comes around, we get to drool over the latest cars and tech available. See some once in a lifetime concepts and get a closer look at cars that are just around the corner for us right now. Without any further ado here’s the new announcements we were most excited about.
Porsche Mission E
Finally some competition for the Tesla Model S, the Mission E boasted a few specs to shake up the all-electric supercar competition. 0-62mpg – 3.5Secs, 0-125 in 12 seconds with a range of 311miles. Their aim is to have the batteries go from flat to 80% charged in just 15 mins which would be faster than the current Tesla Model S.
Alfa Romeo Giulia
This new executive saloon was centre stage for them this year. The first of 8 new models for Alfa to get out by 2018, this one is their chance to gain some market over its competitors the C Class or 3 Series. Their biggest push on this car is to break a new record for a saloon on the Nurbugrings’s Nordschleife circuit. To help with that it'll do 0-62mph in 3.9secs.
Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA
This was a great surprise for us in the office, wasnt in our list of cars to expect at Frankfurt this year, most of us are big Mercedes fans and a lot of us have one ourselves. This is a fantastic, flashy and future look at what the Mercedes-Benz of the future might look like. This concept especially focused on being the most aerodynamic car yet, which they did so in beating the Tesla Models S’s co-efficient drag of just 0.24 down to 0.19. I personally love some great tech and this ticked all the boxes, inside it looks functional and futuristic. Whilst outside it literally changes shape when you get to 80kmh, the alloys flatten out and the backend extends over the rear by 390mm to increase the aerodynamics of the car.
Mercedes S Class Cabriolet
The much awaited 2016 S Class Cab was finally revealed in its full glory. Tagged to take on the high end competition of the Bentley convertibles, the new S Class is just overflowing quality and luxury. For starters the air-con is smart and will keep you perfectly at the right temperature regardless of it the roof is down or not. Once again they have concentrated on the aerodynamics of the car getting this down to just 0.29 which is impressively low for a cabriolet.
Honda Project 2&4
This single seater from Honda was the fruition of work between their motorbike and car design teams. It is designed to give the thrill of a motorbike, whilst still being a car. The seat is suspended right above the road, for an F1 type feel. Under the bonnet it’ll have a 999CC V4 with 210bhp, and weights only 405kg. This looks like it’ll be a fountain of fun on any track day.
This is the first SUV from Jag, and a mighty fine one at that. Being a hugely anticipated reveal there could not have been a better way to show off the SUV than to break a record.
The F-Pace has set a Guinness World Record for doing the biggest ever loop-the-loop! Impressive but what else can it do? Well first you get the choice of three engines, the 375bhp supercharged petrol from the F-Type, the 296bhp diesel and for the entry level range an 178bhp diesel engine. The F-Pace will come with four models initially. It’ll be nice on the inside too with all models coming with full leather and a nice 10.2 inch touchscreen for full multimedia control. All in all this looks to be a killer SUV, we can’t wait for it!
Nissan Gripz Concept
Turning heads this year with this newest concept from Nissan was the Gripz concept. I mean look at it
It’s a pretty mean looking concept. It has been reported that this isn’t what future crossovers from Nissan might look like but we’re hoping that some of its design features might make it through, either the spectacular grill or the McLaren like front and rear lights. Both of Nissans popular small crossovers, the Juke and Qashqai are due for an update in 2016. So we dont have to wait long until we’ll find out what from this Concept gets taking into real life production.
Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo
More concept cars now but who can pass up on talking about a new –futuristic-like Bugatti. They unveiled their Vision Gran Turismo, which for those of you who don’t know are a series of cars a lot of brands design specifically for the new Gran Turismo game due sometime next year. This was put to Bugatti as their first chance to ever appear in the game and seeing this as a chance to get a lot more people into a Bugatti, even if it’s virtually. Bugatti jumped at the idea saying this is a project for the fans, many of whom can’t afford their own Bugatti.
Continuing the love of SUV’s this year was Bentley with their new Bentayga. Being a Bentley it has to be extravagant in the excess. A big focus for Bentley with this car was to give that excess in its speed. Now this is a four or five seater SUV, which will come out with a seven seater option in the near future. Its top speed is 187mph and it does 0-62 in just 4.1seconds. For the amount of car its getting going that fast its really impressive. It’ll be full of the usual luxuries including a six-programme massage function and 22 different ways to adjust your seat, I can’t even think of 22 ways to adjust the seat.
Audi Q6 E-Tron
With Tesla’s upcoming SUV the Model X taking longer and longer to get here, there was bound to be another big manufacture stepping up to the challenging. Audi have done just that with their Q6 E-tron concept which heavily teases at a forthcoming Q6 SUV range. Their bringing a lot of new tech to the table with this too. The lights are Organic Light Emitting Diode headlights (OLED for short) and they are sleek and thinner by design. They have also introduced smart pop out rear-view cameras and a diffuser at the back to set a new record for lowest drag on any SUV being only 0.25, only 0.01 more than the Tesla Model S’s record breaking 0.24. All in all, this looks to be a fantastic future car. Will have to wait and see if Tesla steal the limelight before they can get this on the road though.
We could very well go on about all the new cars at Frankfurt all day long but this seems like a good stopping point. It’s been a spectacular year this at Frankfurt and the cars and the technology are mind blowing. Bring on the future of cars because we quite frankly can’t wait.
