Car Sharing: Is It Really For Us Reserved Brits?

When it comes to car sharing, it seems that we Brits are either shy or concerned with personal space. So how would it work if we decided to car share on our daily commutes to work? And just exactly what are the benefits and pitfalls of such a scheme here in the UK

Those who argue car sharing is a good idea give us plenty of reasons, with the two main ones being:

  • It saves you money
  • It reduces car emissions, thus it is more eco friendly

Companies that have been set up purely to advocate car sharing, such as liftshare.com state that it is simply more fun to share a ride with someone in the morning than driving alone to work. It certainly seems like a nice idea in practice.

The reality is many of us find it either unsafe or too close for comfort. Many people have tested it and found that their car buddy is not exactly someone they would want to be driving with had they been given a choice. So what other way is there to lift share

You could arrange a lift share within your company. You can start this with a simple notice on the office board where people list their journeys, or why not set up your own webpage for your company in which people can sign up An office based scheme will give you the chance to get to know your fellow colleagues better whilst knowing that youre all heading in the same direction to work.

Some companies have been known to pay some incentives to get a scheme like this started and have even used vouchers as an incentive to be on time when participating.

So whilst it may not be the norm here in the UK so far, maybe if various companies took the schemes and did use an incentive based car share then more people would participate. It certainly seems that the workplace could yield the most influence in getting a scheme like this started.
