Car hire prices more than double during the holidays

Families that hire cars during the school holiday seasons in the UK and overseas breaks are being hit with massive mark-ups in charges. Prices in Europe and the United States rise by as much as 176% between June and school holidays in August.
These findings on car prices follows research by Which? Travel that showed package holiday prices increased as much as 30% from the final weeks of school term time to the start of the holidays. The biggest price rises that were surveyed by Which? Travel found were hired from Barcelona Airport. The average prices for a 50 year old driver were £50 for a week in June, however in August this went up to £138. Locations across Europe saw similar rises in prices during the holiday periods.
Which? Looked at average weekly car hire costs for small and large cars in Italy, Portugal, Spain and the US over 12 months. The prices that were shown are the average monthly prices for each car type and destination. They do not include any extras such as excess waiver fees.
