posted on Oct 05 2012 by Sam Jones
The new VW convertible Beetle will be given its first public viewing at next months Los Angeles auto show on November 28.
The cabriolet version has an electric folding cloth roof that takes just 10 seconds to close, even while the car is moving. A cloth roof cover with a chrome surround also comes as standard. In case the car rolls over, the cabriolet has two bars that pop up behind the rear seats in milliseconds to protect the passengers.
However, despite having enough room for four adults, the amount of boot space has fallen from 310 litres in the hatchback version to 225 litres in the convertible. The rear seats do have a 50/50 split though which increases the amount of carrying space in the car.
Three diesel and four petrol engines will be available at launch. The entry-level model will include a 1.2-litre TSI petrol giving 104bhp, while a Bluemotion Technology version of this unit will also be available. The other petrol versions will include a 1.4-litre TSI and a 2.0-litre TSI version. The line-up will be completed with two 1.6-litre and a 2.0-litre diesel models.
The Beetle Cabriolet will go on sale in the UK in spring 2013 and it is expected to be about 2500 more expensive than the hatchback model.
