Automotive Sales Increases In August
posted on Sep 07 2015 by Kiri Nowak
New car sales have increased for the 42nd month in a row, showing that the automotive industry is still going strong. People are tempted by competitive monthly prices and the next generation of buyers are very familiar with paying for their car on a monthly basis.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, explains, ‘August’s strong performance has again been driven by attractive finance deals and a diverse range of technologically advanced models. Britain’s budget-conscious buyers are taking advantage of low regular monthly payments that provide certainty and affordability. With September’s new 65-plate now in full swing, we expect UK showrooms to be as busy as ever.’
This is the highest level of sales in August for eight years, a month that is traditionally a slow sales month due to the upcoming registration plate change. The range of high tech cars available at the moment may also be contributing to the increase in sales.
Many exciting new models have been launched this year, including the BMW X1, Land Rover Evoque, Mercedes-Benz Maybach S600, Mini Clubman, Porsche Boxster Spyder, Honda Civic Type R and the Jaguar XE, to name a few. So far, there have been more than 1.6 million car registrations this year and 79,060 cars were sold in August according to the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders).
Interestingly, there was a year on year increase of 52.3% for alternatively fuelled cars. This shows that hybrid and electric cars are gaining in popularity as drivers are beginning to appreciate the financial and environmental benefits. However, despite sales being up by 53.5%, alternatively fuelled cars still only make up 2.4% of the car market. These increases are encouraging but alternatively fuelled cars still have a long way to go. We offer a wide range of alternatively fuelled cars, click here to see our selection of ‘eco warrior’ cars.
The top selling car last month was the Ford Fiesta, a car that consistently remains one of the most popular cars in the country. You can lease a brand new Ford Fiesta from just £107.24 a month plus VAT on a business lease.
The Ford Fiesta dominated sales in August with 4,753 registrations, the next best selling car was the Ford Focus with 2,673 registrations. The Ford Focus is a practical, efficient, reliable car that’s also a pleasure to drive. Get your hands on a brand new Ford Focus from only £134.96 a month plus VAT on a business lease.
Ford stole the top two places, but Volkswagen crept in at third place in August with the Volkswagen Golf. The Vauxhall Corsa came in fourth place with 2,154 registrations and the Volkswagen Polo was the fifth best selling car in August with 1,911 registrations.
Industry officials predict that this growth is likely to continue towards the end of the year. The SMMT has suggested that full year new car sales will rise by 4% compared to 2014.
