The designers at Opel Special Vehicles (OSV) have been kept busy with the creation of the Vauxhall Astra TwinTop which joins the ever increasing group of the four-seater, folding metal-roofed coupe-cabriolets. The first to start this trend was Peugeot with the 307CC wey back in 2003 and Renault quickly followed suit with the Megane CC.
It wasn't long before Volkswagen and Ford joined the fold with convertible versions of the Golf and Focus by the end of summer 2006. So there's no shortage of choice. Vauxhall Astra TwinTop's party trick is its three-piece folding roof, where as most of the other manufacturers use just two, and its this feature which allows for greater interior space, larger boot and not at the cost of rear-end styling, which is an issue with many other coupe-cabriolets. The Astra TwinTop roof is electronically is folded and unfolded at the touch of a button, folding away in 26 seconds, and the operation can be performed whilst driving.
If your technically minded and want to know what the boys at Opel Special Vehicles (OSV) have stashed deep within the bowels, the Astra TwinTop roof uses a total of five electric motors, eight hydraulic cylinders and 13 sensors to open up the roof at the touch of a button. You won't be dissapointed with the driving position and there is plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel finishing off with well-positioned pedals.
The Astra Twiintop on offer from GMC Car Leasing is the 1.8 16V Sport which offers a 1.8-litre engine that pumps out 138bhp and 129lb-ft of torque at 3,800rpm. It manages a 10.7secs 0-60mph time and a 129mph top speed. Although not individually tested by EuroNCAP, the TwinTop has been engineered to be as safe as the regular Astra hatchback. Rear rollover hoops on this Astra Twintop 1.8 Sport pop-up automatically and a strengthened windscreen surround protect occupants in the unlikely event of a rollover. An alarm and remote central locking are fitted as standard, although the TwinTop's metal roof gives it a clear advantage over fabric-roofed convertibles.
Now on the inside, the guys at Opel Special Vehicles (OSV) were also briefed with the Boot Space. What you have is 440 litres of volume on offer (thats more than a convetinonal Astra which offers 350) with the roof up, dropping to 205 litres when the roof is folded away. Getting to your luggage with the roof is down is made easier by the special 'Easy Load' system that lifts the roof panels up by 25cm so you don't have to feed your luggage through a small gap.
Equipment on this Vauxhall Astra TwinTop 1.8 Sport offers 16inch 10 Spoke Alloys, Air Conditioning, CD30 MP3 Radio + CD, Electric Windows, Front Fog Lights, Heated Electric Mirrors and Seat Comfort Pack. This Sport model gains a remote control for the roof and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. This Vauxhall Astra Twintop 1.8 Sport is available to both Business Users and Private Individuals based on a 2 or 3 year contract hire lease agreement.
