NEW Honda Insight Hybrid from GMC Leasing £267

The Honda Insight will be the least expensive hybrid car in Britain and is currently on offer on contract hire from GMC Leasing. It should also be one of the most economical hatchbacks you can buy, attracting no more than £15's worth of VED licence fee, exemption from London's congestion chargeand more to the point, providing the possibility of near-60mpg fuel consumption. Honda Insight Honda has directed the bulk of its effort at reducing the cost of the Insight's hardware - some of it by as much as 40percent - in the quest for a lower price that will open hybrid motoring to many more buyers. The heart of what's different about this car lies in its propulsion system of course, the - rather small - 88bhp 1.3 litre petrol engine boosted by a 14bhp electric motor for an overall power output of 98bhp. The electric motor performs multiple tasks that include doubling as a generator and starting the petrol engine, but most fundamental is that it uses the car's momentum, when it's coasting or braking, to recharge the battery pack that powers the electric motor. And it's the harvesting of this energy, which would otherwise be wasted, that enables the Insight to return better fuel consumption and lower Co2 emissions. Honda Insight Interior The electric motor boosts the engine's efforts when strong acceleration is required, allows it run on electric power alone when it's cruising at steady speeds (usually between 9 and 28mph but sometimes higher) and doubles as a super-smooth starter motor to fire up the petrol engine, which frequently switches off at idle to save fuel. If all this sounds complex, the net result is a car that promises fuel consumption of well over 50mpg, and potentially more than 60. And since it runs on petrol, which is currently around 12p less than diesel, the savings are all the greater. Honda Insight Rear Its multiple displays provide detail of your fuel consumption history, while another indicates the flows of energy within the car, rather like the Prius. The critical display features a horizontal bar that darts to the right if you accelerate firmly, and left the harder you brake. The aim is to keep the bar as narrow as possible through the gentle application of accelerator and brake. But the most unusual feature is a line of five trees, whose leaves and trunks disappear if you're reckless with your petrol, and sprout if you're good at saving it. At times, it's easy to think that you're playing a Japanese computer game. For more information about pricing, please go directly to our car leasing website

Driverless cars are coming soon

Last updated 10-May-2012 16:09 | Posted by Kyle McWilton

Remember when people expected the 21st Century to be akin to an episode of The Jetsons, with robots doing the bulk of the work for us and people flying around between planets in space buggies?Well, while those visions of the future may not have transpired, something that wouldn't look too out of place in the cartoon series may soon arrive at Heathrow Airport.A bubble-shaped driverless car. described as looking like "an alien spaceship" has been constructed by Martin Lowson, himself a designer of the space age having worked on the Saturn V Rocket which launched the Apollo missions.

The vehicle is designed to offer a solution to the problems of urban travel and they will start operating at Heathrow carrying passengers from car parks to Terminal 5. Lowson, speaking to The Times, said the vehicles could have the same effect on transport this century as the Rocket had on the 19th Century. The vehicles are battery powered without a taxi driver. Passengers simply programme where they want to go via a touchscreen and they coast along at 25mph on their narrow road system. In fact the idea is nothing new, having been around since the 1950s. The US Defence Department is thought to be interested in making a third of its combat vehicles unmanned by 2015.However, the first driverless cars in public use will be these so-called ULTra Personal Pod Cars with Bath and Daventry councils said to be considering joining Heathrow's Terminal 5 in this revolution and inquiries already being made from America, India and the Middle East.

Ford delivers landmark 1.5m Focus

Last updated 09-May-2012 16:33 | Posted by Kyle McWilton

Essex cricketer Jaik Mickleburgh has been handed the keys to the 1,500,000th Ford Focusas the brand hits its latest landmark score. The insanely popular compact family car replaced the Escort in Europe in 1998 and went onto to become the UK’s best selling model for 10 years straight, before the Fiesta nudged in to claim the number one slot.

The 1,500,000th Ford Focus, delivered to right-handed Essex CC batsman Jaik Mickleburgh, 22, was a five-door Titanium X model and the fifth Ford in Jak’s four-year motoring lifetime.

The former U19 England international commented: “I have had four Fords in the four years since passing my test – three of them were the latest Focus models and one Kuga.

“For the long drives between home, Ford County Ground and away games, the Ford Focus delivers. One feature I like is heated seats which soothe away aches after playing.”

The latest Focus, launched last year, saw the introduction of new driver assistance technologies and more recently the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol powertrain, which accounted for 17% of all Focus sales in the UK last month.

This powertrain combines turbocharging, direct injection and twin variable cam timing to deliver high levels of performance and refinement with all the Fuel Ecconomy advantages of downsizing.

The 100PS version enjoys up to 170Nm of peak torque, whilst delivering a combined fuel economy of 58.9mpg and outright best-in-class petrol CO2 emissions of 109g/km.

Audi cranks up the power on new TT RS Plus

Last updated 03-May-2012 10:57 | Posted by Kyle McWilton

Audi has announced a new halo version of its TT coupe and roadster. Known as the RS Plus, the new addition to the range comes with more power, more torque and an enhanced specification to the already swift TT RS.

With the order books open from early May, first deliveries of the speed machine are expected in the summer.

Compared to the ‘standard’ TT RS, the plus model receives 20PS more power and 15Nm of additional torque through a retuning of the high revving 2.5-litre, five cylinder TFSI petrol engine. The resulting 360PS and 465Nm can be channelled to the quattro all-wheel-drive system through either a six-speed manual gearbox or the seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission.

With the automatic transmission installed, the TT RS plus Coupe can hit 62mph from zero in just 4.1 seconds (4.3 seconds for the manual). Marginally slower, the Roadster takes 4.2 seconds or 4.4 seconds depending on transmission. In all cases top speed is electronically limited to 174mph.

Yet despite all the potency available under right foot, the RS plus also stacks up in economy terms, the Coupe achieves a combined economy test figure of 33.2mpg and the Roadster 32.8mpg.

Complementing the performance is an aggressive lookl with impressive 19-inch five-arm “Rotor” design titanium-look alloy wheels which replace the 18-inch five double spoke examples fitted to the standard car. The single frame radiator grille with its matt aluminium surround and polished anthracite diamond-pattern mesh also sets the Audi TT RS plus apart visually, as do the carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) door mirror housings and black oval tailpipe trims. These indicate that the TT RS plus is fitted as standard with the sports exhaust system, an option in the standard car which further intensifies the already bass-heavy exhaust note.

Finally, inside the cabin, the German carmaker has added more equipment over the standard TT RS, so expect sat nav, bluetooth, and an iPod connector; all of which form part of the normally optional Technology pack.
