It is said that1 in10 of all cars sold in the UK is an MPV of some description and Citroenare already provingthat the Grand C4 Picasso is following in the tyre prints of the popular Xsara Picasso andlodging itself firmly in the top ten. Thereis onefeature that clearly make the Picasso stand out from the crowd. This is instantlyobvious when entering into the cabin areais the huge expanse of windscreen, which is said to be the biggest and part of the largest glazed area in its class. In addition to the windscreen there is thevast sunroof, which is also the largest in this segment. The panoramic windscreen rises in a gentle arc, finishing well above the driver and front passenger. Now putting stats into plain English, in a conventional compact MPV, the vertical visibility angle is around 35 degrees, while in the Grand C4 Picasso it is an amazing 70 degrees. It goes without saying that it makes a lot of difference to the interior ambience and all-round visibility, especially with the help of the thin A-pillars, which are split at the base to allow for the large front quarter-lights. In the vast majority of MPV's, the A-pillars are so chunky that they are capable of hiding a bus, let alone a motorcyclist. The combination of the panoramic windscreen and massive glass roof creates a very strange sensation of openness and it feels like open-top motoring but without the wind in your hair.

Anotheradvantage is the fasciawhich is free from clutter providing a cleaner and more relaxing environment. The centre console is no more than an information screen in a slim, centrally positioned, dash-top binnacle. The base of the binnacle is also where you will find the electronic parking brake, which comes on as soon as the engine stops and releases when you pull away. Below the central air-vents is a lidded panel that looks as if it should contain a cigar lighter and ashtray but actually houses the audio system comprises of a radio/CD player . On this manual VTR+the gearshift is sited in the lower fascia panel. Climate controls are situated at the outermost edges of the fascia while the large expanse of dash-top features large storage pods. The lack of clutter in the front of the car does offer a more relaxed atmosphere and themissing central tunnel makes it easy to get between the front seats to the second row or the under-floor storage. The second and third rows comprise of five individual seats of equal size with push-down headrests. There's plenty of legroom for all including the rearmost passengers who have a recessed floor so that they can put their feet under the seats in front. All of these seats are incredible easy to fold away. Those in the third row require only a tug on a strap and the second row are lowered in the same way and a side lever brings up the squab so that they can be pushed forward to allow ingress to the back. The smallestboot capacity is 208-litres but with the third row flattened and the second row pushed back as far as they will goincreases to 576-litres, below the luggage cover. The maximum cargo capacity is 1,951-litres to the roof. Fuel consumption figures for the test car are 25.0, 46.3 and 35.3 mpg for the urban, extra-urban and combined, respectively and there's 190g/km of CO2 from the tailpipe. The Grand C4 Picasso has adaptive front airbags, front lateral and curtain airbags for the second and third rows and a driver's knee airbag. The car also gained a maximum 5-star rating for adult occupant safety in the EuroNCAP tests, scoring 35 points out of a possible 37. It also earned 3-stars for child protection and 2-stars for pedestrian safety.
