Its pretty unbelievable yet the Audi A6 accounts for a quarter of all the Audi vehicles sold and it's even fast earning a reputation for breaking into emerging markets. Throughout all of its updating the Audi designers have managed to keep its great shape and still offers buyers a capable drive and a spacious, beautifully built cabin. Despite all this, Audi has decided to freshen it up for 2009 with a subtle facelift. The all new Audi A6 has a new front bumper, redesigned headlamps and wing mirrors, and the saloon's adopted a pair of LED rear lamps from the Avant estate. Inside, there have also been a few changes to the million-selling A6's cabin. But the biggest changes have occurred under the bonnet. The Audi engineers have worked their magic and on average emissions and fuel consumption have fallen by 15% across the range and on top of that the range has been augmented by more powerful engines. The difference drivers will notice immediately is the replacing of the noisy unrefined old diesel engines with a range of common rail diesels first seen on the all-new A4 range. The Audi A6 is using the new common rail TDI, the 134bhp 2.0-litre averages a creditable 53.3mpg and emits just 136g/km of CO2. As for perceived quality, the Audi still eclipses the competition. The plastics the brand uses feel expensive to the touch, while plenty of chrome and brushed aluminium brighten up a dark, classy businesslike cabin and, if you option it, even the wood looks real. This new AUDI A6 2.0TDie achieves its fuel savings and low emissions by using low rolling resistance tyres, an aero tweak and lengthened gearing. It's this final aspect of the E package that sends shivers down the spine for anyone who has driven the new generation of (VW) BlueMotion and (Seat) Econetic models: However, unlike the more economical versions from its sister brands, the Audi gains a six-speed gearbox and, mercifully, ratios that don't effectively kill performance and flexibility. At last, an economy special that doesn't ask for unrealistic compromises. Back in 2004 the Audi scored an excellent five stars for adult occupant protection and a fine four stars for child protection. There's little change in the safety department for the refreshed model. All models come with six airbags and ESP as standard.
